Rugged and capable DMR + analog transceiver

The DP738 is a well made high power transceiver. Bench testing and field testing have shown that the DP738 meets or exceeds expectations. Transmitter power output is close to 10 Watts, decreasing slightly as frequency increases in both the VHF and UHF bands. Max power output at 147 MHz is about 9 Watts. Max power at 446 MHz is also 9 Watts. Output spectral purity is good with spurious signals 60 dB below carrier typical. Carrier is within 50 Hz of specified frequency at room temperature. Receive sensitivity is also impressive with wide FM sensitivity at -130 dBm to break squelch with 250 Hz deviation CTCSS tone and simultaneous 1 KHz tone with 6 KHz deviation. Full quieting is obtained with 0.5 uV.

Egonomics are pretty good. The color display gives a good indication of what is happening in dual receive mode with nice bar graphs to indicate signal strength. Keys are backlit. Signal reports of my transmitted audio were good. The PTT button is easy to press holding the radio in either right or left hand. An unusual and welcome feature is the ability to set all necessary DMR parameters from the front panel. I was able to key in several FM analog channels and DMR channels immediately upon unboxing the transceiver. The CPS software for Windows is easy to download and install. The DP738 uses a standard analog audio USB cable to interface with the CPS program. The CPS is easier to use than some, but would be nice if it were more like a spreadsheet to allow making bulk changes across all channels in a zone at the same time. The CPS program supports importing DMR ID lists, but I did not test the feature. The Chirp program is also an option, but I did not test it. The DP738 includes an FM broadcast band receiver which works well and allows direct entry of frequencies.

Over all I like this transceiver and recommend it as a good value. For now, the DP738 is my go-to radio because it has plenty of analog FM power and good DMR support.

Digital Radio Question

Police scanners have went Digital now. You can't access them via Ham Radio anymore. Can you access emergency channels like Police, Fire Fighter, and EMS? If we live in states that have heavy natural disasters, can we use the Digital/Analog Radio to access crisis services, or do we still have to rely on Uniden Police scanners that cost $600.00 to $1000.00? It would be very helpful if you answered these questions or list it on the description page.

Very good

I recently purchased this radio, and I’m extremely satisfied with both the product and the customer service. I was missing a part upon delivery, but the support team was fantastic, promptly sending me the missing piece. To my surprise, they also gifted me a power supply and a usb programming cable ! I’m very happy with this experience and highly recommend this company for their exceptional service and generosity.
